I used to work for a major IT company as a full timer, later moved on to become a s/w consultant.
Being a consultant has been the most rewarding of experiences in my life. The idea of non-permanence of a job is thrilling to say the least. It has kept me active thinking and planning better for a long term contingencies. With present state of the US job market, it may appear to be of great risk - it may even sound insane, ut I am addicted to the risk.
It is a strange feeling - getting a week or two between jobs - relaxing and at the same time planning for my next project. More importantly, I get to choose good work, location/city, my pay, when I take a vacation, how long I stay in US etc. If I look back at the position I was a year ago, I feel really good about making the move. Many of my friends who were both smarter and harder workers than me, still are with my old company. There is a huge difference - Secured job/salary, being a nobody among thousands, ambitions shunted by competition (Versus) constant risk of running jobless for weeks, much better pay, big responsibilities and some freedom. Result interests everyone - but 99% cant handle the risk and stress that comes with it!
Ironic- but life seems to be more controlled than when I was in the s/w giant (going with the flow). Lot more fulfilling, except for the occasional thought of India and family..

Military Aviation - Rotary Wings, Conclusion
This will the concluding section of the series
Most of the craft we have here are the Mi series of attack helicopters and Hindustan aeronautics manufactures Chetak, Chetah series. The latest addition (Dhruv or ALH from HAL) seem promising. It has been ordered in large numbers by the coast guard and army. Due to its tremendous success, further derivatives are being planned. Helicopters are one area where India is slightly less dependent on foreign components. We are also exporting Dhruvs to Ecuador and Peru - despite strong US lobbying. This is another first for an indigenous aircraft. We are also developing a rotary winged UAV, in collaboration with Israel for the Indian Navy.
As you can see, we are much dependent on Russia and the west for our products. Though the indigenous efforts wont be immediately fruitful, they have to be persisted to keep the local technical resources and capabilities alive. Also the local infrastructure will be ready for any future technology denial from other countries.

Military Aviation - Surveillance And Attack Crafts
These crafts are generally slower and used for tactical information on the battle field or disaster affected area. US classifies them as ISR (Information-Surveillance and Reconnaissance). They are loaded with an array of sensors for detecting specific optical, heat and radiation signatures.
UAVs have been in use for several decades from basic radio operated toy planes adapted to carry a camera to current day high endurance UAVs which can fly for 15-20 hours relaying continuous battle field coverage. Most of them are controlled by command instructions from ground. There are advances in auto-takeoff and landing sequenced that are already in place. Removal of a human from the equation makes it more expendable. Also persons operating them for long durations can rotate shifts etc. Indian UAVs are predominantly Israeli. Results of indigenous efforts (available on public domain) are not encouraging. But there is a lot of secret research happening here.
Surveillance crafts are generally to get a birds eye view of the sky. However advanced the UAVs become, they still lack the finesse of a human hand and brain. These crafts have higher limits on the size of sensor payloads. These carry specific sensors to acquire targets, relay information to friendly fighters and command bases, finding submarines lurking under water, etc. They form a crucial link in present day network warfare. At peace time they are used to survey disaster affected areas, spying on enemy territory etc. India has vintage 70's era Tu-142 and IL-38 patrolling the coastlines. We should be getting P-8 Poseidon also being built for USAF.
Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAV) are UAVs fitted with missiles/bombs. Still early in development, there are rapid strides - almost all western countries have a UCAV program well under way. US is using tested old platforms and using them currently as attack drones in Afghan border. X-45,X-47 in US, Dassault nEUROn from France, EADS Barracuda from German are noteworthy development projects. India is 2-3 decades behind anything like this - unless we convert Mig21s and LCAs to UCAVs

Military Aviation - Transporters, Refuel tankers and AWACS
I grouped these items because they are are force multipliers. They not directly fight the enemy forces but rather offer crucial tactical assistance and support to fighters, bombers, ground troops and missile defense systems.
Transporters are classified in low medium and heavy. They carry the food supplies, artillery, small tanks/artillery and other defense hardware in and out of war zone. They form the life line for the ground forces at the firing line. They are also used for by dropping para troopers and equipment required by them to remote inaccessible areas. (Indian inventory here is mostly russian in origin - IL76 is the latest)
Refuel tankers are generally modified transport craft capable of carrying large quantities of fuel. Since the fighter have a range limitation and bases are not always near to the war zone, a mid-air refueller extends the range of the fighter by multiple folds. The impact is clear - even a fighter-bomber with limited range can be used for deep strike missions.(Again it is mostly russian crafts - modified IL range of tranporter crafts)
An airborne early warning system - in colloquial terms is a big radar hosted on a flying platform. By virtue of its height and power, it can scan for targets way out of range of radars(4-5 times more) than fighters and bombers. They serve as command posts in the air - guiding other crafts and warning them about enemy vessels or missiles. They also detect low flying missiles accurately and provide inputs for missile defense systems. These days, such crafts are integrated with electronic counter measures equipments and armed with weapons. They are still at their infancy and new uses are formulated everyday for these crafts. (Indian inventory will contain the indigenous AWACS on a brazilian jet and the Israeli Phalcon system on a IL76)

Military Aviation – A Brief History of fighters
We always had a flair for flying. The idea of objects heavier than air getting off the ground was unimaginable just over a century ago. Another thing we have a flair for is war. The marriage of these two was inevitable. First primitive aircrafts were flown by Wright brothers around 1903 and by the first world war(1914),within 10 years, we had aircraft being developed and used for military needs. Helium filled airships were sitting ducks even for these primitive crafts. But aircrafts were largely at their infancy - contributed too little to the WW-I in spite of showing great potential.
1st generation - Wars are periods of accelerate scientific progress. Aircrafts developed as crucial and deadly force multipliers. A testament to this fact is WW-II. Sturdy monoplanes, propellers replaced by jets, radar, extensive aerodynamic innovations, automated machine guns, material research - to name few. The days of the dog fights had begun. The one who can turn faster could kill better. It took just few months for allies to catch up with the German technology - but finally they did. WW-II crafts are accepted to be first generation
2nd Generation When the Soviet and US were locked in a cold war, it was the most productive and innovative period of aircraft design improvements in rocket engines provided planes with compact missiles. Interceptors were born. Agility was sacrificed for speed and armament. New wing shapes, advanced radars and beyond visual range combat were signs of a second generation aircraft
3rd generation involved advanced avionics, instrumentation and advancements in radar, airframes and many other components. Improved guns, more fuel and load carrying capacity and ability to takeoff and land from and aircraft carrier were some major advancements.
4/4+/4++ generation fighters brought in true multi-role capabilities. One aircraft being able to carry air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Infrared sensor pods, highly advanced avionics suite for survivability, electronic warfare suites and counter measures etc. Also large amount of computer aided. Conscious design/material innovations pertaining to reduced radar(RCS) and infrared signatures. There were huge advances in engine efficiencies, thrust vector control (direct jet at certain angles to improve maneuverability and turn rates)
5th generation - Very low observability (VLO) design concepts, drastic reduction in RCS, internal weapons bay, powerful active array radars which can double as microwave weapons, most advance electronic counter measures suite, passive sensors, missile evading using decoys etc. Needless to say, they contained all enhancements of 4th gen. F22 Raptor of USAF is the only operational fifth gen fighter presently. F-35 (USAF-RAF) and FGFA(Russia-India) are being tested and will catchup soon..

Traitors
Suddenly all those who care about the country's well being seem to be in the communist party. Congress and BJP should realize one thing - CPI is not playing Indian politics anymore, it is international politics
They want to curb inflation, protest against high fuel price and electricity price. But they dont want the N-deal with US to go through. India is starving for energy -so much so that it goes for a pipeline carry gas from Iran through its mortal enemy Pakistan, at the same time provoking US. And all our communist friends care about is Israel-India-US axis of power. If the India-China-Russia axis of power is so good, why doesnt Russia join the protests against Chinese incursions? Russians have a struck a communist chord expressing solidarity. It is high time India takes a stance - either for or against them.
Look at any internal terrorist problems. Assam, Orissa, Andra and now Nepal - every one of them have communist links. Efforts of Congress to reason with them have been stagnated. I dont think it is the inability of congress. There is proverb in my language - you can wake a person who is asleep, but not the one who is acting to be asleep. They dont wish to see the reason - no use reasoning with them.
Communism is as noble a concept as any other. But these traitors hide behind its wall and disregard national interests. By now their intentions and vested interest should be clear to all national parties. I can only hope they are not part of any ruling coalition in the future...

Euthanasia and....
We attach a great deal of importance to life and individual's right to live. So much so that the concept of euthanasia is criminal to many.
Religions condemn it, nations have laws against it, doctors who execute this right are universally loathed. I can understand that religions were created hundreds of years ago - a time when man catches a deadly disease or get hurt too bad - he dies on his own. Medicine was not developed enough to make him live (and suffer).
The dilemma around Euthanasia is the choice - whether to keep someone alive(with pain and embarrassment) or take his/her life (serve peace). A crooked analogy with the case of capital punishment here - When a criminal is kept alive, people around her/him suffer (sometimes the criminals themselves suffer) - when he is executed, there is peace. Euthanasia is as much the right of the individual as executing a felon is the duty of the state.
I wonder if there is also a difference between someone who is prepared to die for something, and someone who wants to die because of something. They are both prepared to die (except if give a choice, a felon will not submit to execution :) ). After all, no one can add meaning to their lives after a certain point...
These people living their lives makes our life tough. So we kill them. OUR love for a patient and hate for the criminal results in THEIR death - with or without their consent!! Hmm...Interesting

Quotes On Alcohol
Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.
An alcoholic is someone you don't like who drinks as much as you do.
Don't drink and drive, you might hit a bump and spill your drink.
You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on.
Stay busy, get plenty of exercise, and don't drink too much. Then again, don't drink too little.
Time is never wasted when you're wasted all the time.
One reason I don't drink is that I want to know when I am having a good time.
A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine, except that on a day without sunshine you can still get drunk.
I stopped drinking, but only when I sleep.
This is one of the disadvantages of wine: it makes a man mistake words for thought.
Cigarettes and coffee: an alcoholic's best friend !!!!
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they always worked for me.
The consumption of alcohol may cause pregnancy.
Cocaine is gods way of telling you that you make too much money.
I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.
A man who exposes himself when he is intoxicated, has not the art of getting drunk.
Reality is a crutch for people who can't handle drugs.
There is a devil in every berry of the grape.
A bartender is just a pharmacist with a limited inventory.
I drink to forget I drink.
I would take a bomb, but I can't stand the noise.
Better belly burst than good liquor be lost.
Prohibition may be a disputed theory, but none can say that it doesn't hold water.
The first glass is for myself, the second for my friends, the third for good humor, and the forth for my enemies.
Alcohol is necessary for a man so that he can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts.
Once, during Prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water.
The whole world is about three drinks behind.
I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Gizmo Mania
Among other things I am a gadget freak. Like to possess the coolest and newest gadgets around. My general experience is that the second or third in market will offer much more bang for the buck than the market leader (e.g a Creative or SanDisk than an Apple Ipod).
Some sites I check regularly are:
Crave
AnythingButIpod
Gizmos For Geeks
Gizmodo
ThinGeek
Last by not least Amazon
For product reviews
I do a lot of homework before buying, which usually saves me the pain and debate - of whether I was right or wrong to have bought it. This is for anybody shares the passion for these toys, Enjoy!

Act Naturally
One of my favorite oxymorons around. Continuous cycles of judging and being judged.
Each situation demands that we act in a pre-approved way. For example, there is a certain etiquette that is expected in a job interview, certain way of acting in a group discussion or debate, certain way of dressing for formal and informal occasions and so on..
It is a continous cycle because, the subject becomes aware of the observers and their evaluation methods. There are thousands of books and courses that teaches a person to react to a college interview, job interview etc. At one point, both the interviewer and interviewee know what answer to expect and are already expecting that answer. The interview becomes a stage where the characters act out their parts as expected.
Acting natural wont get you anywhere - you have act out what is perceived as natural. Sometimes it makes me wonder if these behavior rules are framed first and then started to be followed or vice-versa!

THE BEST OF THE BEST OF BUMPER STICKERS SEEN IN NEW YORK CITY
Could you drive any better if I shoved that cell phone up your ASS?
If you can read this, I can slam on my brakes and sue you!
Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're an asshole.
100,000 sperm and YOU were the fastest?
Your gene pool needs a little chlorine.
You're just jealous because the voices are talking to me and not you!
DON'T PISS ME OFF! I'M RUNNING OUT OF PLACES TO HIDE THE BODIES.
You are depriving some poor village of its IDIOT
Save Your Breath ... You'll need it to blow up your date!
Forget world peace. Visualize using your turn signal.
My Hockey Mom Can Beat Up Your Soccer Mom
GROW YOUR OWN DOPE, PLANT A MAN
All Men Are Animals, Some Just Make Better Pets
Some people are only alive because it is illegal to shoot them.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.
WANTED: Meaningful overnight relationship.
BEER: It's not just for breakfast anymore.
So you're a feminist...Isn't that cute?
I need someone really bad...Are you really bad?
Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.
All men are idiots....I married their king.
The more you complain, the longer God makes you live.
IRS: We've got what it takes to take what you've got.
Hard work has a future payoff. Laziness pays off now.
Reality is a crutch for people who can't handle drugs.
Out of my mind...Back in five minutes.
Hang up and drive.
Smile, it's the second best thing you can do with your lips.
I took an IQ test and the results were negative.
Where there's a will...I want to be in it.
It's lonely at the top, but you eat better.
Don't drink and drive...You might hit a bump and spill your drink.
We are born naked, wet, and hungry....Then things get worse.
Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies.
Consciousness: That annoying time between naps.
Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?
Be nice to your kids...They will pick out your nursing home.
Always remember you're unique...Just like everyone else.
........And the #1 bumper sticker of the week..............
Honk If You Want To See My Finger
If you can read this, I can slam on my brakes and sue you!

The Stage Is Set
The world suddenly seems crowded. Conflict of interests everywhere. China wants Taiwan, raising its troops on the Indian border, Georgia supported by west for autonomy, Russia expressing apprehensions over the US missile shields on European soil, talks about renewed cold war, Chinese hackers attacking US govt sites, Tibet and the Chinese Olympic (World War II was preceded by a notoriously controversial Olympic), Pakistan siding with Chinese, Iranians (Possibly Russia too), India siding with US and the west, UN loosing strength (not enough soldiers, couldn't stop US from invading Afghanistan or Iraq), Iran threatening Israel more than ever.
Simply put, the world peace is hanging by it last threads. Let us just count the number of countries with Nuclear armaments and the means to deliver them: During WW II - only US, possibly Germany, Now: US, France, Britain, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea (probably Israel, Syria and Iran also). Countries split from USSR (Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan) and countries part of NATO (Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Canada, Greece and Turkey) also have nuclear bombs.
Thanks to mother nature, it is disasters like Katrina, Tsunami on Indian ocean, massive earthquakes in Indonesia and China, which are keeping the minuscule unity/humanity alive. In my opinion, the potential trigger locations are Israel-Syria-Iran belt or India-Pakistan-China belt. With So many powerful countries on ambitious growth tracks - conflict of interest is inevitable - war is imminent. Time is the only questionable entity..
